  • A next-generation hybrid-powered expedition ship and one of the world’s most sustainable cruise vessels, combining cutting-edge green technology with advanced polar-ready design.
  • Scandinavian Comfort & Panoramic Views – Stylish, modern interiors with floor-to-ceiling windows, outdoor hot tubs, and all cabins facing the ocean.
  • Immersive Adventures – Small-boat landings, hiking, wildlife encounters, and lectures guided by a world-class Expedition Team and onboard Science Center.

Why Choose MS Fridtjof Nansen?

The MS Fridtjof Nansen is a purpose-built polar ‘class 6’ next-generation expedition ship equipped for challenging environments with top-notch safety, stability, and crew. The ship is one of two near identical twin custom built ships which features an ice-strengthened hull and a wave-piercing bulbous bow.

Every expedition cruise includes a hand-picked team of specialists to guide and educate guests during their voyages. With a team of expert guides, naturalists and photographers, you’ll experience landings by zodiacs, hikes, wildlife sightings and lectures.

The interiors of MS Fridtjof Nansen are crafted from natural Scandinavian materials such as granite, oak, birch, and wool. Expect sleek, Scandinavian design with panoramic lounges, an elegant explorer lounge, large windows and a relaxed, stylish atmosphere. Every cabin is an outside cabin, and many have private balconies or large windows so you can take in the views.

The observation decks are designed for guests to enjoy views of the Antarctic scenery and wildlife.

MS Fridtjof Nansen can carry up to 530 passengers, but it is limited to 500 passengers for Antarctic cruises. You’ll have a more personal and immersive expedition than on a big-ship, non-landing cruise ship.

The ship’s design means passengers are divided into manageable groups for excursions, typically around 100 per group, to ensure safety and enhance the experience.

MS Fridtjof Nansen has a hybrid-powered system with large battery packs and a shore power connection.

Dining On MS Fridtjof Nansen

The ship has three restaurants offering various dining options inspired by Norwegian and international cuisine.

Aune serves regionally inspired meals made with fresh, local ingredients in a relaxed, social dining space. Lunchtime buffets and A-la-carte are available in the evening, and the menu changes every night.

Lindstrøm offers an elevated experience with fine dining options with a Scandinavian twist and a curated wine list. It must be booked in advance.

Fredheim serves global comfort food and casual favourites like burgers and tacos in a cosy, modern space.

From Arctic delicacies to international bites, every dish is thoughtfully prepared to complement your journey to some of the world’s most remote destinations.

Room service is also available from Fredheim Restaurant throughout the day.

Cabins On MS Fridtjof Nansen Ship

MS Fridtjof Nansen features relaxed and stylish cabins. All cabins are outside facing, so you’ll always have a view – whether through large picture windows or from your private balcony in upgraded categories. Options range from Polar Outside cabins with cosy, well-appointed spaces with everything you need to Arctic Superior cabins with added comforts like tea and coffee making facilities and more spacious layouts.

For the ultimate experience, Expedition Suites feature generous living areas, a large double bed, balconies, jacuzzis and complimentary access to the Restaurant Lindstrøm. The bathrooms are spacious and have heated floors.

Some cabins feature a sofa bed to accommodate extra suite guests.

Onboard Experience

Life onboard MS Fridtjof Nansen is a seamless blend of modern luxury, relaxed comfort and immersive exploration. The ship’s design features warm wood tones, soft textures and expansive windows, so you’re always connected to the surrounding landscapes. The atmosphere is calm and inviting, whether soaking in the outdoor hot tubs, swimming in the infinity pool, or relaxing in the sauna with ocean views. Guests can relax and rejuvenate in the large gym and wellness center on board.

The onboard Science Center is a hub of discovery where you can participate in hands-on workshops, attend talks by expedition experts or dive into citizen science projects. Social spaces like the Explorer Lounge & Bar offer cosy corners to unwind with a drink, swap stories with fellow travellers or watch the wilderness unfold outside.

Activities & Excursions On A MS Fridtjof Nansen Cruise

MS Fridtjof Nansen offers a variety of excursions in the most spectacular corners of Antarctica and the Arctic, including wildlife watching and guided hikes. Daily landings and shore expeditions by zodiacs allow you to set foot on shore, explore glacier fronts or visit remote communities.

Guided nature walks and hikes cater to all fitness levels, with expert guides providing insight into local ecosystems and wildlife. Wildlife encounters are a highlight, with opportunities to see whales, seals, seabirds or even polar bears, depending on the region.

Onboard, the experience continues with enriching lectures and interactive workshops led by the Expedition Team, covering topics such as climate science, polar history and photography. You can also participate in real-time research through citizen science programs, contributing to global wildlife and environmental studies. The Science Center is an exploration hub with high-tech tools, microscopes and exhibits.

Optional add-on excursions offer even more adventure, including kayaking among icebergs, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in the polar regions and cultural experiences in Indigenous communities. On select voyages, unique activities – like camping in Antarctica are available.
