Falkland Island Destinations

Situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, approximately 280 miles from the coast of South America, the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) are a sparsely populated archipelago with concentrations of wildlife not seen elsewhere. Often combined with cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia, the Falkland Islands are a perfect stopping-off point for any wildlife lover, birdwatcher or explorer.

Port Stanley

The Capital of the Falkland Islands, Port Stanley, is located on East Falkland island and has a population of 2,500 Falkland Islanders. Reminiscent of a quaint English village, Stanley is a fascinating place to visit with its waterfront, Christ Church Cathedral, cafes, the Falkland Islands museum, and memorials to the 1982 conflict. It is the main stopping-off point on all cruises to the Falkland Islands.

Gypsy Cove

A nature reserve near Stanley, Gypsy Cove is one of the best places to see wildlife nearby. Magellanic penguins can be seen in the tall tussock grass, and other bird species, including the Falkland Islands Steamer Duck, are found only on the islands and nowhere else in the world.

Volunteer Point

One of the best places to see penguins on the Falkland Islands, Volunteer Point a nature preserve that is home to 2000 pairs of breeding King penguins that nest on the shore. A local population of 3600 Gentoo Penguins and 2500 Magellanic penguins can be seen on the white sand beach as they plunge into the surf.

Steeple Jason Island

The island is a birdwatchers' paradise. At just miles long and 1 mile wide, Steeple Jason Island has the largest colony of black-browed albatrosses on Earth. Over 110,000 breeding pairs nest on the island, making it one of the Falkland Islands' most iconic sites. Rockhopper penguins, sea lions, and Striated Caracaras also live on the island.

Carcass Island

With no land-based predators, birdlife thrives on Carcass Island. Located off the coast of West Falkland, the island is known for its Magellanic penguins, black-crowned night herons, seals, and albatrosses. The small settlement of Port Patterson also has three heritage-listed buildings, making it one of my favourite landing sites on the Falkland Islands.

Bleaker Island

Run as a sheep farm for over a century, Bleaker Island is the perfect place to see how Falkland Islands wool is made. The island is an important birding area with a population of King penguins, rock cormorants, and 49 other bird species. The beaches are home to southern sea lions and the occasional visiting southern elephant seal.

What Will I See On A Falkland Islands Cruise?

The Falkland Islands offer some of Earth's most significant concentrations of wildlife, pristine white sand beaches and landscapes seen nowhere else on Earth, and a storied history.

Wildlife

Like its distant neighbour, South Georgia, the isolated shores and remote uninhabited islands of the Falkland Islands are a haven for wildlife in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Wildlife is a major attraction that draws visitors, from penguin colonies that outnumber the human population to sea lions, elephant seals, and rich marine life.

Secluded Beaches and Landscapes

From pristine sand beaches teaming with penguins to rolling hills and rich geological features, the scenery of the Falkland Islands is like nowhere else on Earth. Stone runs made up of quart blocks cascade from the hillsides and are only seen on the Falkland Islands. The unique scenery is perfect for hiking to one of the island's many hilltops.

History

The Falkland Islands have a rich tapestry of history and tradition from its discovery in 1690 to the 1982 conflict with Argentina. Memorials document the conflict across the archipelago. Learn about the traditional way of life, including sheep farming, one of the islands' leading economies.

Wildlife Of The Falkland Islands

Here are some wildlife species you can see on a Falklands cruise.

Black Browed Albatross

70% of the world's black-browed albatrosses, totalling over a million, migrate to the islands yearly to breed. Identified by their pure white head with a black line above the brow, their wingspan measures 210 - 250cm, making for quite a spectacle as they swoop in the sky.

Penguins

Over one million penguins nest on the shorelines, providing outstanding opportunities to see five species: king, Rockhopper, Macaroni, Magellanic, and the largest Gentoo penguins on Earth. The world's largest colony of Gentoo penguins, totalling 120,000 pairs, resides on the islands and 100,000 Magellanic penguins.

Elephant Seals and Sea Lions

Southern elephant seals haul out on the sandy beaches. On warmer days, they can be seen burying themselves in sand to keep warm. Adult males can be seen jostling for position amongst the females, throwing their body weight against each other. Sea lions and fur seals also swim in the waters around the islands and come ashore to breed.

Birds

The Falkland Islands is a birdwatcher's paradise with 220 species recorded on the islands. Two endemic species are found nowhere else on Earth: the Falkland Steamer Duck and the Cobb's Wren. Sheerwaters, striated caracaras, petrels, and sooty shearwaters all breed on the islands. Be sure to bring your binoculars.

Falkland Islands Cruises & Tours FAQ

When is the best time to go on an Antarctica cruise?

Cruises to the Falkland Islands occur in the southern summer months between November and March. These are the best months for wildlife viewing and offer visitors the warmest temperatures. Here are the highlights by month:

November is an excellent month for viewing albatrosses and penguins incubating their eggs. Migratory penguins (Rockhopper, Macaroni, and Magellanic penguins) return to breed on the islands, and elephant seals begin to mate.

December is the best month to witness penguin chicks hatching on the sandy shores. From December until February, you can enjoy the warmest weather, with highs of 14°C. Be warned, however, that the sunlight in the Falkland Islands is strong, so make sure you pack your suncream.

January The newly hatched Gentoo and Rockhopper chicks form large bustling creches in the tussock grass close to the coast. It’s an excellent time to see Elephant seals haul out on the beaches to begin their annual moulting.

February – the beaches are filled with sea lion pups that form groups. Newly born Magellanic penguins leave their burrows for the first time. February is one of the warmest months in the Falkland Islands.

March: Sea lions haul out onto the beaches. King Penguins can be seen feeding their young. Penguin chicks from all other species begin to fledge before heading out to sea in April.

No matter which month you visit the Falkland Islands during the summer, you will be sure to encounter an abundance of wildlife.

The best month to cruise to Antarctica ultimately depends on what you want to see. For a detailed month-by-month guide of what to expect in Antarctica, including wildlife, please check out our guide Best Time to Go To Antarctica.
