Greenland Cruise Destinations

With over 27,000 miles of pristine coastline, Greenland beckons you to explore. Choose from expedition cruises to the remote East Coast to see the northern lights against the backdrop of some of the most incredible landscapes in the polar regions. Or choose the West Coast and the far north to discover the Inuit way of life in the High Arctic. During the summer, enjoy the midnight sun above the Arctic Circle.

Disko Bay & Ilulissat

Disko Bay is a large basin on the west coast of Greenland with some of the largest icebergs on Earth. It is fed by the nearby glacier Sermeq Kujalleq, Greenland's fastest-moving glacier, which produces 10% of all icebergs in Greenland. The UNESCO Ilulissat ice fjord is a fantastic place to observe these giant ice sculptures.

Qannaq and the Far North

One of the most northern settlements in Greenland, Qannaq, is home to 646 local Inuit who live on the edge between civilisation and frontier. Expedition cruises to the far north offer insight into ways of life in the High Arctic, which is known for its traditional Inuit hunters, glaciers, and wildlife, including polar bears.

Nuuk

The capital of Greenland, Nuuk, is nestled at the entrance to the Nuuk fjord, the second-longest in Greenland. Steep-sided mountains provide the backdrop to Nuuk's colourful houses and buildings. Cruises and tours to Greenland often start or end in Nuuk, and its new international airport offers air connections to the rest of the world.

Northeast Greenland National Park

Northeast Greenland National Park is the largest national park on Earth and has no permanent human population. It's one of the most vast wildernesses on the planet and the least explored place in Greenland. Trapped by sea ice for most of the year, the park can be visited during the late summer in August and September - perfect for the northern lights.

Scoresby Sund & Ittoqqortoormiit

Scoresby Sund is one of the most scenic places in Greenland and the longest fjord on Earth. Mountains touch the water at the fjord's edge, and giant icebergs calve off neighbouring glaciers and float throughout the fjord. One of Greenland's most isolated villages, Ittoqqortoormiit, sits at the entrance - the perfect place to stop off and see the Greenlandic way of life.

Southern Greenland

The southern region of Greenland is known for its green landscapes, sheep farms, hot springs, and stunning blue icebergs. The Taseirmuit fjord, with its granite peaks, is as captivating as Patagonia. Prins Christian Sound is a long fjord allowing ships to pass through Greenland's most enchanting landscapes.

What Will I See On A Greenland Cruise?

Greenland offers some of the polar regions' most captivating scenery and natural wonders entwined with the local Inuit way of life.

Collosal Icebergs

Due to its large ice cap and surrounding glaciers, the waters around Greenland are abundant with icebergs that can be seen everywhere. Greenland has by far the largest icebergs in the Arctic. These monumental sculptures are simply breathtaking and a highlight of any visit.

Remote Inuit Villages

With a population of 56,000, Greenland is the least densely populated place on Earth. Visiting remote villages and getting a feel for the traditional way of life is a highlight of any Greenland cruise. Try dog sledding in East Greenland with local Inuit hunters or enjoy a guided tour of a Greenlandic settlement by a local to understand life in this remote place.

Epic Fjords and Scenery

Greenland has some of the oldest landscapes on Earth carved by receding glaciers. It is a place to immerse yourself in nature. Expedition cruising in Greenland is a great way to explore the fjords, glaciers, and majestic mountains that seem to stretch on forever.

Wildlife Of Greenland

While wildlife is not as common in Greenland as in Svalbard, a Greenland cruise can show a diverse range of Arctic species, including musk oxen, reindeer, beluga whales, Arctic foxes, and Arctic hares.

Whales

During the summer, the waters around Greenland are home to up to 16 whale species that come to feed in the nutrient-rich waters. Disko Bay is a hotspot for watching whales, where you can see humpback and fin whales swimming among the gigantic icebergs. You can see bowhead whales close to the pack ice if you are lucky.

Polar Bears

In East Greenland, polar bears can be seen on the land or traversing ice floes. Whilst sightings are rarer than in Svalbard, it is possible to see polar bears on an icebreaker cruise that navigates the pack ice during the springtime.

Bird Life

Greenland is rich in bird species, with 230 species observed. Sixty bird species breed in Greenland. Common birds to see on a cruise include white-tailed eagles, Atlantic Puffins, Snow buntings, rock ptarmigans, guillemots, and eiders.

Seals

Seals are common throughout Greenland, often swimming in the water or resting on ice floes. Harbour seals, hooded seals, ringed seals, harp seals, and walruses are common species in Greenlandic waters.

Greenland Cruises and Tours FAQ

When is the best time to go on a Greenland cruise?

May and June

Heavy sea ice locks the coast of Greenland during the spring months. These months are ideal for icebreaker cruises to explore the pack ice and participate in winter activities such as dog sledding with local Inuits.

July

During midsummer, guests can enjoy the midnight sun above the Arctic Circle with the warmest temperatures. July is ideal for exploring Southern Greenland and Disko Bay as they bask in the summer warmth.

August and September

Trips to the far north and East Greenland become possible in August as the sea ice recedes throughout the summer. From late August, the northern lights become visible in the skies across Greenland. Towards the end of September, the temperatures cool as winter approaches.

How To Get To Greenland

There are two ways to get to Greenland: cruise or fly.

For traveller’s ease, expedition cruises departing from Greenland ports include charter flights from Reyjavik, Paris, or other European capitals.

Expedition cruises to Greenland depart from Reykjavik, Iceland, with outstanding flight connections to North America and Europe.

If you travel to Greenland independently of a cruise, you can fly to Greenland from Iceland or Denmark with Air Greenland or Icelandair.

How To Travel In Greenland?

As Greenland is a very remote area with minimal infrastructure and no roads outside settlements, a great way to travel around Greenland is on an expedition cruise. It’s a chance to visit places such as the Northeast Greenland National Park or the villages of Tassilaq and Ittoquortomit, which are trapped by sea ice for most of the year.

You can also visit Greenland on a regular cruise ship. However, these ships are not equipped with Zodiacs for shore landings, so their destinations are much more limited. If you plan on seeing the best Greenland offers, we highly recommend an expedition cruise.

What will I do On A Greenland cruise?

Greenland cruises are a great way to explore the country’s raw nature. Cruise ships are equipped with Zodiacs and a team of expedition guides who will take you exploring off-ship.

Expect daily shore landings to visit natural sites such as glaciers and undertake hiking in the remote wilderness. Join additional activities, kayak amongst the ice, or try dog sledding on an early-season icebreaker cruise.

When is the best time to see the northern lights?

The best time to see the Northern Lights in Greenland on an expedition cruise is between the end of August and October.

What Will the Weather Be Like on a Greenland Cruise?

Greenland has an Arctic climate in the north, and summer temperatures vary between 3 – 15°c. Southern Greenland is warmer than the north, with summertime temperatures reaching as high as 20°c.

Temperatures can drop below freezing at night during the spring and autumn months.

It’s important to dress for variable temperatures with many layers that can easily be added or removed.
